Over near Lillian, Laurel and Carroll Hixson have offered Pick-Your-Own Blueberries for about 20 years. My sister and I did it once and it was a very pleasant morning. Easy pickins... remember NO THORNS ! They do not use any pesticides or herbicides. The Hixson farm is on 40 acres and they grow nearly 20 varieties of blueberries. Blueberries are great eaten fresh but they also keep great in the freezer. You might see deer, turkey, or rabbits in early morning or late in the day. Hillcrest Farm is located a few miles west of the Lillian Bridge off U.S. 98 at mile marker 76 on the north side of the road. Follow the signs to 30 497 Hixson Road, Elberta, Alabama. During picking season, the farm is open from dawn to dusk. Open June to Sept. Call 251-962-2500 for additional info.

If you are here in June thru Sept, give them a call at Hillcrest Farm and Vineyard to see if it is BLUEBERRY picking season. Fun for all ages. Blueberries grow on bushes about as tall as you or me so there is no leaning over. No thorns either. When you do 'pick-you-own' the cost is dirt cheap compared to the grocery stores. And, most blueberries are grown with out the use of any herbicides, so it is an environmentally friendly crop.

Many people do not know that Alabama even has beaches, but Alabama has the most beautiful white sugar sand beaches around. The weather is glorious, the area is full of golf courses, and the Alabama Gulf Coast has been a steady award winner in family beach vacation categories. Gulf Shores is the original and most well known part of the beach, Orange Beach has been more recently developed and Perdido Key is right next to Orange Beach. We do not have nearly the traffic problems that the Destin area seems to have now-a-days. The prices are very reasonable down in Dixie, the weather is exceptional, and the people are the friendliest ever !
