Fort Morgan

Aerial View of Fort Morgan, from the South.

Fort Morgan, located on Mobile Point at the mouth of Mobile Bay has watched over Alabama's major shipping entrance for almost two centuries, now. This site, which was first militarized by Americans as Fort Bowyer (completed 1814), has seen combat defending the port of Mobile in both the War of 1812 against the British, and during the Civil War. Major construction of the large masonry fort we know today was completed in 1834, with improvements and upgrades occurring through the second World War. Fort Morgan is now designated as a National Historic Landmark, and is open to the public. For anyone visiting the area interested in 19th century military and naval history, Civil War history, or historic construction and renovation, a visit to Fort Morgan is a must.

Fort Morgan is a Third System Coastal Defense Fort. Third System forts were built after the War of 1812 because Congress realized that the southern and eastern coastlines needed stronger fortifications. Construction began in 1819 and was completed in 1834, Fort Morgan was named for General Daniel Morgan, a Revolutionary War hero. Fort Morgan was used in the Civil War, Spanish-American War and as a training base during World War I. In 1941 the Fort was reactivated and manned by the Navy and Coast Guard before being deactivated in 1946 and turned over the State of Alabama.
