Gulf Shores Public Library
The state of Alabama has a very progressive library system. Two resources available at the Thomas B. Norton Public Library are Camellia Net (downloadable audio books) and the Alabama Virtual Library (searchable online databases). Camellia Net, which is located at http://camellia.lib.overdrive.com , is a system through which people can download audio books and listen to them for the time period specified in the book description. Typically this is for a period of 14 days, but it does vary. All that is needed is a valid library card, an internet connection and the free software required to listen to the books. After the lending period expires, the downloaded file will no longer work and the book is returned to the library for other users to enjoy. This means no more late fees or worrying about returning the book on time. Up to 10 books can be checked out at one time and of the book you want is checked out you can be put on a holding list for it. When it becomes available you will be notified by email. The books can be listened to on PCs, PDAs, portable audio players and even burned onto a CD. The audio book selection includes classics, best sellers, fiction and nonfiction. Questions about this service should be directed to the Thomas B. Norton Public Library at 968-1176. The Alabama Virtual Library, or AVL, provides all residents of the state of Alabama access to online databases of magazine, journal and newspaper articles to use for research. Best of all this service is free. The AVL is accessible at libraries and schools and if you want to access it from your home all you have to do is go to the public library and ask about getting an AVL card. Cards will have to be renewed every 3 years and to renew you just go to the issuing library. The website for the AVL is located at http://www.avl.lib.al.us

Many people do not know that Alabama even has beaches, but Alabama has the most beautiful white sugar sand beaches around. The weather is glorious, the area is full of golf courses, and the Alabama Gulf Coast has been a steady award winner in family beach vacation categories. Gulf Shores is the original and most well known part of the beach, Orange Beach has been more recently developed and Perdido Key is right next to Orange Beach. We do not have nearly the traffic problems that the Destin area seems to have now-a-days. The prices are very reasonable down in Dixie, the weather is exceptional, and the people are the friendliest ever !
