Hurricane Gustav winds and rain come to Gulf Shores...
Labor Day 2008
We really could not be sure what path this huge hurricane would follow so most residents of our the Gulf Shores area began hurricane preperations several days ahead. The Governor set a mandatory evacuation for everyone south of Fort Morgan Road. The hurricane path veered west towards Louisiana as the computer model predicted and we only received the fringe bands of rain and wind. PTL....these photos were taken in the mid afternoon, after the eye of the hurricane had made landfall

About mid afternoon the streets were clear and there was a little bit of traffic. This view is just south of Fort Morgan Rd. looking south on Hwy 59, Gulf Shores Parkway, towards the Gulf Place, the Public Beach. We had not gotten as much rain as we thought we minght at this point, some of it came later.
There was a some water in the usual low-lying areas, like near the Original Oyster House and Windmill Ridge Rd.

The Gulf Shores Police were at Gulf Place, our public beach area. They did not restrict people from walking on the boardwalk or going out on the beach, but kept an eye on everything.

There were just a few people around. The wind was very strong, I would guess about 25 to 30 MPH steady while we were there. Salt built up on our eye glasses in a matter of seconds. I cleaned the camera lens constantly. Even with a ponytail thru my baseball cap, it would not stay on my head.

Along the Intercoastal Waterway, people had moored their boats out of the main channel. The wind was much milder just this little bit inland. Even the WalMart parking lot had boats and campers parked in it.

Now over near the bridge, at Alabama Point, some fun was going on....youth with surf boards and boogie boards were riding the rolling waves near the bridge. Did their Mommas know...probobably not ! They did tend to stick to the waters inside the entrance to the pass and not out in the Gulf thankgoodness.

Fort Morgan
On Fort Morgan Road there was some water across the highway and the police had a road block to keep people from passing thru it about 8 miles down from Hwy 59. We had to turn around.

The waves in the Gulf of Mexico were huge out Fort Morgan Road. We only saw one other car while we were therre taking photographs. The low end of the wood ramp had been damaged by the water.

Some houses are built to withstand hurricane force wind like this handsome Italian style home our Fort Morgan Road built of The DacArt Building System.
