Kayaking the Bon Secour River
Any day, even a hot day, is a great time for a leisurely boat float on the Bon Secour River. It is amazing how close to busy Gulf Shores the Beachin' Kayak Rentals business is. This uncrowded paradise is a great water sports spot for the non-sporting crowd. These rigid, floating, sit-atop kayaks are easy for anyone to maneuver and paddle. You are launched from Beachin' Betty's back yard into the cool, clear spring-fed Bon Secour River where it is tiny and shallow. How far you travel is up to you. Go north to the start of the river along your own private mini-river. The boat rental period is up to four hours and that is long enough to glide south past the Spanish moss laden oaks and magnolias out to the wider areas where the Bon Secour River joins Mobile Bay. You'll float past quaint cottage, bridges, boathouses, turtles sunbathing on logs all the while watching fish swim beneath you in the clear water. No kayaking experience is necessary and Beachin' Betty furnishes life jackets along with the boats. Bring some sun screen, some snacks and beverages and pass a good time on top of the water. Many people ask about snakes but it really is not a threat. We didn't see a single snake all day in Mid-June. The put-in and take-out is at the same spot so save some elbow power for the return leg of the voyage.
The Bon Secour River has a rich shrimping history and life along the Bon Secour River is just as rich. As you canoe or kayak along you will find tree swings and once you get out past County Road 20 bridge, you'll see casual fishermen and more boats. While there are homeowners along the banks, you will mostly view wild Azalea, Gardenia, Magnolia trees, Live and River oaks and tropical foliage and fascinating tree root tapestries on the river banks. . Plan to visit the historic village of Bon Secour and purchase freshly caught shrimp or fish off boats as fishermen dock to sell their catch to various seafood markets that dot the river. Many people do not know that Alabama even has beaches, but Alabama has the most beautiful white sugar sand beaches around. The weather is glorious, the area is full of golf courses, and the Alabama Gulf Coast has been a steady award winner in family beach vacation categories. Gulf Shores is the original and most well known part of the beach, Orange Beach has been more recently developed and Perdido Key is right next to Orange Beach. We do not have nearly the traffic problems that the Destin area seems to have now-a-days. The prices are very reasonable down in Dixie, the weather is exceptional, and the people are the friendliest ever !
