The feature attraction of the Gulf Adventure Center is the Hummingbird Zipline course. New for the 2013 summer crowd, this course features seven towers supporting a mile-long course that carries visitors across Gulf State Park's Lake Shelby, and along the beach road with scenic bird's-eye views the whole way. Visitors zip from tower to tower, climbing to a height of 90 feet at tower six. The sixth and final leg leaves the tower with two lines, letting pairs of visitors race 1228 feet across Lake Shelby at speeds up to 30 mph to the final tower, built at the end of a pier on the lake.
The whole experience lasts about 2 1/2 hours, beginning with a "Ground School" to familiarize adventurers with the equipment, and practice on a short pair of 60 ft lines, just off the ground. Adventurers must be age 8 with a minimum weight of 65 lbs, up to a maximum capacity of 260 lbs. Visitors should arrive a half hour before their appointment, and expect to climb just over 300 stairs in total along the course. Wear closed-toe, sturdy shoes, and dress comfortably for the weather with clothing that will accommodate the harness equipment... bathing suits and ultra-short shorts, as well as skirts and flowing materials are not recommended. Make sure to empty your pockets, and have straps for any eyewear you want to use on your adventure ! Small cameras are permitted, with photography allowed at certain way-stations, but no cameras out on the ziplines.
Tours are conducted in groups up to 12. With special rates available for groups over 12, as well as churches, schools, scouts, and other organizations.
