West Beach in Gulf Shores, AL--A look after Hurricane Ivan--Oct 04

Looking up West Beach Blvd just off Hwy 59, the condo area received plenty of damage. It will be a long time before electricity, water and sewage services are restored to this beachfront neighborhood.

Our favorite little restaurant, Sun Place Else is sitting at an angle, leaning at a slant from front to back now.

A little further down is a local favorite, Bahama Bobs Restaurant. Looks to be in OK shape.

The machinery started working immediately--a whole bunch of sand has been moved is a short time.

Another older set of condos has pilings at various angles now.

Next to the older townhouse style condos is the look of   'New Gulf Shores', right next door to the two new buildings is a great example of   'Old Gulf Shores'. May of us are having a hard time getting excited about the tall high-rises going up. A tall building like this one puts a lot more people and automobiles on the beach  and road per foot of coastline than the older style homes and condos do.

A small condo complex called The Village survived better than we expected. It has large unprotected glass windows on the front and sides. None seemed to be broken. A section of the roof was blown off and all the staircases were destroyed but the pool looks ok even tho it is minus it's decking and landscaping.

Further on down the road is the well known Pier 33 Grocery.
