West Beach Hurricane Katrina Photos Immediately after the Hurricane Katrina, the following day, neighbors borrowed my little peddle boat to go check on their home on West Beach, about 4 miles down from Hwy 59. At this time West Beach was still totally off limits for any auto or foot traffic. They took a little disposable camera with them and returned with some photos which I have scanned (poor scanner is on it's last leg after having been tossed in the car for hurricane evacuation so many times--reason for poor quality scans)
The ground level walls and partitions are damaged from the water surge, but we are most fortunate to have our beach homes still standing on West Beach here in Gulf Shores.
Many of the boat docks that went out into Little Lagoon are damaged.

Many people do not know that Alabama even has beaches, but Alabama has the most beautiful white sugar sand beaches around. The weather is glorious, the area is full of golf courses, and the Alabama Gulf Coast has been a steady award winner in family beach vacation categories. Gulf Shores is the original and most well known part of the beach, Orange Beach has been more recently developed and Perdido Key is right next to Orange Beach. We do not have nearly the traffic problems that the Destin area seems to have now-a-days. The prices are very reasonable down in Dixie, the weather is exceptional, and the people are the friendliest ever !
